Soof embroider is done from the reverse side of the cloth. Artisans meticulously count the warp and weft threads, using the grid of the fabric as their sole guide to create uniform, tightly packed satin stitches. There are no drawings or reference lines sketched onto the fabric before embroidering. The artisan visualises complex geometric patterns entirely in her mind, creating the design directly onto blank cloth. Soof is recognized as a registered Geographical Indication (GI) in India, which helps protect its heritage and provides sustainable livelihoods for women artisans.
