This piece is a combination of three techniques: hand weaving, block printing and kantha hand embroidery.
Block Printing is a series of mordant and resist stamping (using hand carved wooden blocks) and dyeing. It enabled Indian printers to create uniquely complex designs, coveted from Southeast Asia to the palaces of Mughal emperors and the far-flung capitals of Western Europe.
Kantha embroidery originally was a way to mend worn items (e.g. sarees) by stitching more than one together using simple running stitching (kantha). The upcycling of its time. Here kantha stitching is used to embellish the outline of the hand block printed design in vibrant red.
