Pattus have been an important part of the traditional dress of the people in the Thar Desert that lies in the western part of Rajasthan.  They were woollen blankets woven by the Meghwal community of weavers in Barmer, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner districts of Rajasthan. Today, they are mostly woven in cotton. The craft came to be known as Pattu weaving because the fabrics woven were narrow in width and usually called ‘patti’ (band) in the local language.  Once off the loom, these fabric strips were stitched together to increase the width. Then two panels were joined together length-wise so that they may be wrapped around the body easily.  Today, the strips are also turned into cushion covers, table runners, and more.              SOURCE:  Textiles and Clothing Research Centre India
