Aari or crewel embroidery gets it name from the pointed crochet hook (aari) which is used to do the embroidery. The fabric is stretched tightly over a wooden frame and bigger pieces embroidered by embroiderers on all 4 sides. It is a form of embroidery that originated in the Mughal era in India, from the 1526 - 1700, by which time India produces about a quarter of global GDP. SOURCE: designkart.com
